PC-32 — St. Peter Chrysologus Prayer Card

The Golden-Worded Doctor — patron of preachers, homilists, and all who speak for God

His name says it all: Peter Chrysologus — "Peter of the Golden Words." Born in Imola, Italy around the year 380, he served as Bishop of Ravenna from approximately 433 until his death in 450 and is known to this day as the "Doctor of Homilies" for the concise but theologically rich reflections he delivered throughout his episcopate.

His principal weapon against the paganism and abuses he found in his diocese was the short sermon — and many of them have come down to us through the centuries. They are full of moral applications, sound in doctrine, and historically significant in that they reveal Christian life in fifth-century Ravenna. He was famously afraid of boring his congregation, and so he kept his homilies brief, brilliant, and burning with pastoral love. One of his most quoted lines captures his spirit perfectly: "He who wishes to frolic with the devil cannot rejoice with Christ."

St. Peter Chrysologus was designated a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XIII in 1729 — recognition that the man who had spent his life teaching his own flock had, thirteen centuries later, been recognized as a teacher of the universal Church. He is the patron saint of preachers and homilists. His feast day is July 30th.

This St. Peter Chrysologus Prayer Card is a beautiful and uncommon devotional gift for priests, deacons, permanent deacons in formation, seminarians, Catholic communicators, and anyone who uses words in the service of the Gospel.

Perfect for: Priests, deacons, seminarians, Catholic preachers, homilists, RCIA teachers, Catholic communicators, July 30th feast day, and ordination gifts.
