PC-34 — St. Thomas More Prayer Card

"I die the King's good servant — but God's first."

In the history of the Catholic Church, few saints capture the imagination and the conscience quite like St. Thomas More — lawyer, scholar, statesman, husband, father, wit, and martyr. Born in London in 1478, he rose to become the Lord High Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII — the highest legal office in the land — and was known throughout Europe as a man of brilliant intellect, iron integrity, and deep personal holiness. His friend Erasmus called him a man for all seasons. History has agreed.

When Henry VIII sought to divorce Catherine of Aragon, remarry, and declare himself Supreme Head of the Church of England — breaking with Rome and demanding that every subject swear to acknowledge his authority over the Church — Thomas More quietly refused. He did not rage or denounce. He resigned his chancellorship, retreated into private life with his beloved family, and kept his reasons to himself under the protection of silence. It was not enough. He was arrested, imprisoned in the Tower of London, tried on fabricated evidence, and beheaded on July 6, 1535. On the scaffold, he told the crowd he died "the King's good servant — but God's first."

Pope Pius XI canonized him in 1935, and Pope John Paul II declared him the patron saint of statesmen and politicians in 2000 — a recognition that his example of moral courage, integrity in public life, and fidelity to conscience in the face of earthly power is as urgently needed today as it was in Tudor England. His feast day is June 22nd, shared with his fellow martyr St. John Fisher.

Perfect for: Lawyers, politicians, judges, civil servants, Catholic professionals, law school graduation gifts, June 22nd feast day, men's retreats, and anyone called to hold the line between conscience and compromise.
