PC-22 — Ugandan Martyrs Holy Card

Twenty-two young men who chose death over denying Christ — and changed Africa forever

In 1886, in the royal court of King Mwanga II of Buganda in modern-day Uganda, a group of young Catholic converts faced an impossible choice: renounce their faith and submit to the king's demands — or die. They chose to die. Led by Charles Lwanga, a 26-year-old catechist and chief of the royal pages who had secretly baptized several of his fellow pages the very night before their arrest, twenty-two young Catholic men and boys — ranging in age from just 13 to 30 — were marched 37 miles to the execution site at Namugongo and burned alive on June 3, 1886. As the flames rose around him, Charles Lwanga's last word was simply "Katonda" — "My God."

Pope Paul VI canonized the Ugandan Martyrs on October 18, 1964 — the first African saints of modern times — declaring that the blood of these young martyrs had become the seed of a flourishing African Church. Today, millions of pilgrims travel to the Namugongo Shrine every June 3rd to honor their sacrifice. Uganda and much of sub-Saharan Africa is deeply Christian today, in no small part because of the witness of these young men who would not be separated from the love of Christ.

This Ugandan Martyrs Holy Card is a powerful reminder that heroic faith is not a relic of ancient history — and a beautiful devotional gift for anyone inspired by the courage of Africa's greatest saints.

Perfect for: African Catholic communities, youth ministry, confirmation gifts, martyrology devotion, June 3rd feast day, Catholic schools, and missions in Africa.
